“I am no thief.”
But I am. I stole his faith in the nobility of Men. He disappeared rather than face me again.
Silence surrounds me. There is only the cold realization of what I have almost done. The silence continues after I return to camp and numbly tell of Frodo’s vanishing. It continues as his cousins race off blindly to find him, so desperate they are to protect their kin. We are similar in that respect; I cannot let them perish because of my folly.
For them, I give my life. For my honor. For the Quest. For Frodo.
